The selective school test is really hard – which is why a comprehensive selective school program is absolutely crucial to succeed.
With a success rate of only 30%, even the most naturally gifted students need to take the time to prepare – and with many students starting to work with a tutor from as young as third grade this is only getting more and more competitive.
The Hills Learning Center preparation program is designed to familiarize each student with the exam content, show them strategies to confront the most challenging questions and ultimately walk in to the exam with confidence that they know what they are about to face.
Because what we do is small group, every program is unique. Your tutor will know exactly what your child needs to focus on and build the program around these core skills – something you won’t find in a classroom environment.

Year 1
It all starts here, forming a solid foundation will help cement concepts learnt further down the track, students in early years of school will absorb everything like a sponge, as such it is critical that they are taught methods and techniques the correct way. We will teach them how to study, learn new concepts, and how to work around concepts completely unfamiliar to them.
Year 2
Preparation for the NAPLAN tests will now begin. Only the second year into school and the students will be sitting a national exam in one years’ time, which will give an indication where your child is compared to the country.
We will personally work with your child to improve not only their school class material, but also their general ability, maths calculations, and advanced English skills.
Year 3
This is an important step in the students schooling path, the work and content that will be taught this year will be fairly more difficult than those learnt in years 1 and 2. On top of this, they will have to sit a national exam that is done by every student in Australia in year 3.
To help guide them through this period we will provide personalized homework booklets and proven teaching methods to ensure they come out on top smiling!
Year 4
Now that your child has completed their first NAPLAN test, the school will have an idea of where your child lies compared to everyone else in their class. Up until this point in their schooling their results in exams haven’t played a significant role in deciding which class they should be placed in.
During the period of June/July schools hold an exam for students to be placed in an “Opportunity Class” (Sometime abbreviated to “OC”). If they do well, in year 5 they will be placed in a class with other students that have done well academically, which will give your child and excellent chance to get into a state selective school.
We will work with your child in developing problem solving skills with our learning materials that cannot be obtained anywhere. Our materials are tried and proved texts that have been developed by our team of tutors, you can be rest assured that our weekly homework booklets and “opportunity class” style exams every 2 weeks give your child the boost they need.
Year 5
Year 5 is the most important year in terms of studies; think of it as the HSC for year 12 students that determine which University they may attend. At the beginning of year 6 (March) students will sit a selective school exam which will determine if they can attend an academically high achieving school. As the exam is on early year 6, year 5 to an extent becomes a preparation year. Along with helping your child with their school work, they will be provided unique content in boosting their skills in:
1. Thinking Skills
2. Mathematical Reasoning
3. Reading & Writing
They will be provided comprehensive content in class, and weekly homework booklets along with exams in between. This will ensure your child is comfortable and familiar with the questions in their test as they would’ve done hundreds of similar questions all year, giving them the confidence to come out on top!
Year 6
The initial part of year 6 mainly focuses on the selective school exams, where we will work with your child in boosting their skills in:
1. Thinking Skills
2. Mathematical Reasoning
3. Reading & Writing
They will be provided comprehensive content in class, and weekly homework booklets along with exams in between. This will ensure your child is comfortable and familiar with the questions in their test as they would’ve done hundreds of similar questions all year, giving them the confidence to come out on top!
After this exam you child will be prepared in taking the next big step into high school, where the content in learning material increases vastly. They will need to develop basic algebra skills, be competent in fractions and problem solving skills.
